Evolution of LASIK Surgery

LASIK or Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis is also known as laser vision correction/laser eye surgery is a form of corrective eye surgery for myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia. Even though it is a well-known procedure now, it was a completely new and innovative one just a couple of decades ago.

In the late 1970s, doctors used to perform a procedure called, Radial Keratotomy, wherein several incisions on the cornea were made to correct refractive errors and by the late 1980s the hinged technique was brought in and is still being practiced. The hinged technique decreases potential risks and reduces the healing time too. The development of the automated microkeratome and excimer laser helped in furthering of the procedure. The excimer laser was initially developed for making computer chips but it was later found out that it can work well in the context of eye-related corrective surgeries too.

In 1989, the patent for the LASIK procedure introducing the flap technology earlier discussed was awarded to Ghola, Peyman, M.D. The same procedure received approval of the FDA in 1999 and since its approval, the whole refractive surgery services have come a long way and has been proved as a viable and efficient option to treat various vision-related disorders.

Further technical improvements drastically increased the predictability of the outcomes and created a feasible form of treatment of myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia. The LASIK surgery that we know of today, is a combination of excimer laser technology and surgical incisions using microkeratome. In this process, using a microkeratome a corneal flap is cut, the shape is corrected and placed back in its place. The quick healing nature induced by the flap decreases the healing period and hence gained a lot of popularity amongst the patients who are trying to hang up their glasses forever worldwide. The presence of LASIK eye surgery in Nagpur too is prominent enough to be felt strongly and technologically making a match with the world.

Even though the LASIK form of refractive surgery has gained predictability and acceptance, it’s success lies a lot on like patient’s candidature, doctor’s continued education among other factors and as the form of surgery develops both healthcare providers and patients have to stay well informed so as to make a correct decision.

Many eye hospitals in the orange city tend to perform LASIK with a surgical blade whereas we at Madhav perform Contoura LASIK also called bladeless LASIK where LENSX Laser is used for creating a thin flap on the cornea whereas for the actual procedure EX500 Excimer Laser is used. Both these high-end technology machines are actually present in very few eye hospital in Central India including Madhav. To know more about LASIK contact us at
